Biarritz (pronounced [bja.ʁits], in Gascon Occitan Biàrritz, in Basque Biarritz or Miarritze) is a French commune situated in the département des Pyrénées-Atlantiques in the région Nouvelle-Aquitaine, in the South-West of France. Bordered by the Atlantic Ocean, the town has a maritime frontage of 4 kilometres, in the hollow of the golfe de Gascogne, less than 25 kilometres from the border with Spain. The locality results from the union of two ancient centres of settlement, one devoted to agriculture and the other oriented towards maritime trades.
A little history
The presence of prehistoric ancestors is attested in several places in the locality. The vallon de Chabiague revealed occupation of the site during the Palaeolithic, during the Mousterian, that is approximately 300,000 to 30,000 before present (BP) and the Aurignacian (approximately 39,000 to 28,000 BP). Likewise, at the sites of Mouligna and the bois de Boulogne, traces dating from the middle Würmian (50,000 to 30,000 BP) and the Neolithic (9,000 to 3,300 BP) have been confirmed, and at the cap Saint-Martin, from the advanced Neolithic. The grotte du phare de Biarritz was occupied at two periods, first during the Chalcolithic, then during the final Bronze Age.
