Bordered by the Atlantic Ocean, the town has a maritime frontage of 4 kilometres, in the hollow of the golfe de Gascogne, less than 25 kilometres from the border with Spain. The locality results from the union of two ancient centres of settlement, one devoted to agriculture and the other oriented towards maritime trades.
