Sur le plan historique et culturel, la commune est dans la Montagne Noire, un massif montagneux constituant le rebord méridional du Massif central. Exposée à un climat océanique altéré, elle est drainée par l'Agout, le Thoré, l'Arn, le Ruisseau de Nègeurieu, la Sème, le ruisseau de Banès de Cors, le ruisseau de Peyroux, le ruisseau Rieupeyroux et par divers autres petits cours d'eau.
