Issue d'une paroisse ayant appartenu au duché de Bretagne, elle fait partie du pays de la Mée. Commune à vocation agricole, de tradition rurale et chrétienne (principalement catholique), Villepot a connu un lent déclin démographique d'un siècle suivi d'une stabilisation à partir des années 1980, et a la particularité de ne pas faire partie de la zone d'influence de Nantes, chef-lieu du département, mais de celle de Rennes.
