Pornichet [pɔʁniʃɛ] is a commune in the west of France, situated in the département of Loire-Atlantique, in the région of Pays de la Loire. It also forms part of historic Brittany, situated in the pays Nantais, one of the traditional pays of Brittany. Pornichet became a commune in 1900, from territories of Saint-Nazaire and La Baule-Escoublac.
A little history
Until the creation of the commune in 1900, Pornichet was a trève (quarter) of Saint-Nazaire and Escoublac. The étier, which wound between the dunes of the baie du Pouliguen and the Pointe du Bé, formed the boundary between the two communes. On the cliff at Congrigoux, at the north-western end of the plage Sainte-Marguerite, traces of a flint fishhook manufactory dating back 4,000 years have been found. Later, Gauls were present at the current lieu-dit Les Forges, where remains of iron and bronze working were discovered.
