Saint-Brevin-les-Pins [sɛ̃ bʁevɛ̃ le pɛ̃] is a commune in the west of France, situated in the département of Loire-Atlantique, in the région Pays de la Loire. The commune is part of historic Brittany, in the traditional pays of the pays de Retz and in the historic pays of the Pays nantais. The commune is located at the mouth of the Loire, on the opposite bank to Saint-Nazaire, the city on whose development that of Saint-Brevin depends.

A little history

Archaeological work has revealed traces of a bivouac dating back to the Palaeolithic period (the lieu-dit La Briordais and the Boivre estuary). As the four dolmens and five menhirs recorded in the commune attest, the site of the commune was inhabited during the Neolithic period. The rocky headland at the mouth of the Loire estuary bears the name Mindin, a word of Celtic origin meaning "stone fortification", which may suggest that the site was in use during that period. From the Celtic settlement there remain the vestiges of two Gaulish villages, and the Gallo-Roman period has left behind the remains of six villas.
