Orvault [ɔʁvo] is a commune in the west of France, located in the département of Loire-Atlantique, in the région of Pays de la Loire. It forms part of the Pays nantais in historic Brittany. A rural commune until the 1950s, it then experienced, under the influence of neighbouring Nantes, a demographic explosion lasting until the end of the 1970s. Its population subsequently stabilised until the 2010s before experiencing a new period of sustained growth.
A little history
Traces of Neolithic occupation have been discovered at the lieu-dit le Mail-le champ du bas. Not far from there, at the lieu-dit du Mail-la Patache, remains have made it possible to confirm the presence of a ceramic manufacturing site, which was active during the Iron Age and throughout the Gallo-Roman period. The territory on which the present-day commune stands was crossed by a Roman road linking Blain to Nantes. The first church, founded by disciples of Hermeland d'Indre (saint Hermeland, or saint Herblain), dates from the end of the 8th century.
