Saint-Sébastien-sur-Loire is a French commune in the West of France, situated to the south-east of Nantes, in the département of Loire-Atlantique, in the Pays de la Loire region. The territory of the commune was occupied at the earliest 3,000 years before our era. A zone of Celtic settlement, the region was dominated by the Gallo-Romans, then by the Franks, before being incorporated into the kingdom and then the duchy of Bretagne.
A little history
But it remained for a long time a prize contested by the neighbouring feudal powers, in particular the counts of Anjou. In 984, Geoffroy Grisegonelle extended his domain as far as the Sèvre nantaise. He fortified his possessions to the south of Nantes, notably by constructing a fortress at le Pallet. This powerful fort gave Geoffroy control of the valley of the Sèvre nantaise and of the routes of access from Poitou to the Comté de Nantes. The Angevin power took advantage of the construction of the keep of le Pallet to allow the founding of a very important monastery at Vertou.
