Villeneuve-lès-Maguelone [vi.lə.nœ.və le ma.gə.lɔ.nə] (in Occitan Vilanòva de Magalona [vi.lo̞.'nɔ.vo̞ de ma.ɣa.'lu.no̞]) is a French commune situated in the east of the département of Hérault, on the outskirts of Montpellier, in the région of Occitanie. Exposed to a Mediterranean climate, it is drained by the canal du Rhône à Sète, the Mosson and various other small watercourses.
A little history
The île de Maguelone, owing to its position in a lagoon separated from the sea by a coastal barrier, became in the 6th century, at the beginning of the early Middle Ages, the seat of a diocese that has since disappeared (the bishopric was transferred to Montpellier in 1536). During the early Middle Ages, Maguelone was the principal urban centre in the region. The town of Montpellier did not appear until the end of the 10th century. The bishops of Maguelone played a notable role throughout the Middle Ages, alongside the counts of Melgueil (Mauguio), the lords of Montpellier (985–1240), and then the town of Montpellier (from 1240 onwards).
