Vervins (pronounced [vɛʁ.vɛ̃]) is a French commune situated in the département of l'Aisne, in the région of Hauts-de-France.
A little history
The oldest written trace of Vervins dates back to the Roman period in the 3rd century, in the form Verbinum or Vironum. It appears on the Itinéraire d'Antonin and on the Table de Peutinger. Verbinum/Vironum was situated at the crossroads of two Roman roads, one linking Bagacum Nerviorum (Bavay) to Durocortorum (Reims), and the other linking Augusta Viromanduorum (Saint-Quentin) to Macquenoise (Belgium). This ancient settlement was in all likelihood a vicus, a secondary agglomeration, of the citas of the Viromanduens.
