Vernet-les-Bains [vɛʁnɛ le bɛ̃] (Vernet only in Catalan) is a French commune, situated in the centre of the département des Pyrénées-Orientales in the région of Occitanie. From a historical and cultural standpoint, the commune lies in the pays de Conflent, corresponding to the collection of Pyrenean valleys that converge with the bed carved by the Têt between Mont-Louis and Rodès. Exposed to an altered oceanic climate, the town is drained by the Cady, the Riu de Saint-Vincent (ca) and by various tributaries of the Saint-Vincent.
A little history
A church of Saint-Saturnin appears in written records for the first time in 874, standing on the left bank of the Cady (around the present-day quarter of Saint-Saturnin), and it is probably around this church that the first village took shape. The seigneurial castle, now gone, was at that time situated at Casteil (in Catalan Castell de Vernet, meaning the castle of Vernet) and belonged outright to the counts of Conflent and Cerdagne, who resided not far from there in their palace at Corneilla. The latter founded, between 997 and the year 1000, the abbaye Saint-Martin du Canigou, endowing it with the seigneury of Vernet in 1007.
