Argelès-sur-Mer (pronounced), (Argelers in Catalan) is a French commune situated in the south-east of the département of Pyrénées-Orientales, in the Occitanie region. From a historical and cultural standpoint, the commune lies within the Roussillon, a former province of the kingdom of France, which existed from 1659 until 1790 and covered the three vigueries of Roussillon, Conflent and Cerdagne. Exposed to a Mediterranean climate, it is drained by the Tech, the Massane, the Riberette, the Ravaner, the Abat, the Miloussa and by various other small watercourses.
A little history
Without going as far as the mythology that would have Hercule found Argelès, it is certain that the territory of the commune was occupied by man from ancient times, as attested by the presence of the dolmen des Collets de Cotlliure, that of the Cova de l'Alarb, and an ossuary from the metal age found at the Cova de la Turtuga. A Graeco-Roman sanctuary existed at the site of La Fajouse, in the massif des Albères.
