Les Angles (Catalan, Els Angles) is a French commune situated in the west of the département of Pyrénées-Orientales, in the région of Occitanie. From a historical and cultural standpoint, the commune lies in the pays du Capcir, a high plateau formed by an ancient glacial basin set between the granite massifs of Carlit and Madrès. Exposed to a mountain climate, it is drained by the Têt, the Aude, the Lladura, Rec de Puig Peric, Rec de Vallsera and two other watercourses.
A little history
The presence of pottery shards collected during construction work on the housing estate of La Solana proves that the territory was occupied in prehistoric or protohistoric times. The territory of Les Angles was given in 965 by Sunifred II de Cerdagne, comte de Cerdagne, to the monastery of Saint-Michel de Cuxa. In 1181, the King of Aragon authorised the abbot of Saint-Michel de Cuxa to fortify his possessions. The inhabitants then abandoned the old village, built around the church of Saint-Sauveur, to take up residence within the walls of the château's fortifications.
