Amélie-les-Bains-Palalda (in Catalan, Els Banys d'Arles for Amélie-les-Bains and Palaldà or Palaudà for Palalda, or nowadays Els Banys i Palaldà) is a French commune created in 1942 by the merger of the former communes of Amélie-les-Bains and Palalda, situated in the south-east of the département of Pyrénées-Orientales, in the région of Occitanie. From a historical and cultural standpoint, the commune lies within the Vallespir, a former viscountcy (encompassed during the Middle Ages within the viscountcy of Castelnou), attached to France by the treaty of the Pyrénées (1659) and corresponding approximately to the valley of the Tech, from its source to Céret.
A little history
A prefectoral order of 1 October 1942 attached, on 1 November 1942, the commune of Palalda to that of Amélie-les-Bains to form the new commune of Amélie-les-Bains-Palalda. On 17 November 1962, a prefectoral order attached the commune of Montalba-d'Amélie to that of Amélie-les-Bains-Palalda, without any change to the latter's name.
