Vatan, the town
Vatan covers 29.8 km², lies between 118 and 201 m above sea level and had 1,994 inhabitants in the 2023 census.
Vatan (pronounced in French, [vatɑ̃]) is a French commune situated in the département of Indre, in the Centre-Val de Loire region. It has held the Village étape label since 1997 and the Villes et Villages fleuris distinction with 2 flowers. Exposed to an altered oceanic climate, it is drained by the Meunet, the Pozon and various other small watercourses.
A little history
King Gontran established a collegiate church to watch over the relics of Saint Laurian at the end of the 6th century. The village developed as a castral town, that is to say growing up around a castle (a motte-and-bailey) which provided it with protection. Initially, the village was built in the outer courtyard of the castle, the whole being defended by moats into which the water of the Pozon was diverted. A second motte was then built, and a surrounding wall united the parish of Saint-Christophe, the town built around the prieuré Saint-Laurian, and the outlying districts, the Faubourg Haut and the Faubourg Bas.
