In 2015, the communauté d'agglomération de Châteauroux, which became Châteauroux Métropole on 1st January 2015, had 70,445 inhabitants and the aire urbaine de Châteauroux had 93,202 inhabitants, making it the 85th largest in France.

A little history

Châteauroux was preceded in history by Déols. Gallo-Roman presence there is attested by sculpted stones, coins, ceramics and funerary urns. In 2013, the remains of four Gallo-Roman temples were uncovered at the entrance to the town during excavations carried out by the INRAP on the chantier de la rocade Est. Around 920, the monks of the abbaye Saint-Gildas de Rhuys near Vannes took refuge with Ebbes le Noble, prince of Déols, to protect the relics of saint Gildas from the Norman occupation of the south of Brittany between 919 and 939.
