A little history
Little known, the origins of La Châtre have, in the past, given rise to much speculation among local historians. According to Émile Chénon, a permanent garrison came to be established, during the time of the Roman occupation, on the heights overlooking the Indre, so as to monitor the Argenton-Châteaumeillant road. This camp (castra) is at the origin of a population settlement.
