Le Blanc, the town
Le Blanc covers 57.6 km², lies between 72 and 140 m above sea level and had 6,164 inhabitants in the 2023 census.
Le Blanc is a French commune and a sub-prefecture of the département of Indre, in the région of Centre-Val de Loire. Exposed to a modified oceanic climate, it is drained by the Creuse and various other small watercourses. Included in the parc naturel régional de la Brenne, the commune possesses a remarkable natural heritage made up of two Natura 2000 sites and a zone naturelle d'intérêt écologique, faunistique et floristique.
A little history
On the border of Berry, Poitou and Touraine, Le Blanc owes its existence to the presence of a ford making it possible to cross the Creuse, which is relatively wide at that point, and to the establishment of a vicus on the right bank, along a Bourges–La Rochelle route that was well frequented in Antiquity. In the current state of research, Le Blanc appears only in 968, in the cartulary of the abbaye Saint-Cyprien de Poitiers, in the form of vicaria Obliacensis. The course of the Creuse, dividing the town until the end of the Ancien Régime, influenced its entire history. More recent, the lower town, to the north, formed around the église Saint-Génitour, along the Roman road.
