Issoudun is a French commune and a sub-prefecture situated in the département of l'Indre, in the région of Centre-Val de Loire. Exposed to an altered oceanic climate, it is drained by the Théols, the Tournemine, the Vignole, the Bénitier and various other small watercourses. The commune possesses a remarkable natural heritage composed of one Natura 2000 site and two natural areas of ecological, faunal and floral interest.
A little history
Situated halfway between Bourges and Châteauroux, the Biturige settlement of Uxeldunum, destroyed at the approach of Caesar and rebuilt by him, is a site that has been occupied since Antiquity without interruption. Two Roman milestone markers were found in the 19th century, truncated and re-hollowed to make sarcophagi. According to the remains of deciphered inscriptions, one dates from Nerva and the other from Septime Sévère. In the 11th century, the lords of Yssoudun, princes of Déols and sires of Château-Raoul named Raoul, Ebbe(s) or Eudes, struck their own coinage.
