Thonon-les-Bains is a French commune situated in the département of Haute-Savoie (of which it is a sub-prefecture), in the region of Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes. Situated in the historic region of Chablais and more precisely of Chablais haut-savoyard (or français), on the shores of Léman, the commune is also part of the urban agglomeration of Grand Genève. According to the municipal population of reference in 2025, based on 2022 data, it is the second most populous commune in the département with 37,689 inhabitants, after Annecy (131,272 inhabitants) and ahead of Annemasse (37,595 inhabitants).
A little history
According to mythology, the town was founded by an ancient Germanic tribe that took part in the massacre of the Romans in the Forêt-Noire [insufficient source]. On the shores of Léman, during road bypass works around the town in 2004, a middle Neolithic necropolis of the "type Chamblande" was uncovered at the lieu-dit Genevray. The site yielded 220 burial sites, dated between 3,300 and 4,800 years BC, spanning from the middle of the 5th millennium to the end of the 4th millennium.
