A little history
During the Middle Ages, Gaillard was the centre of a châtellenie. It was known as Chastel-Gaillard and became simply Gaillard after the demolition of the château in 1589. Gaillard, by virtue of its particular geographical position, played an active role in the history of Genève and Savoie. Indeed, even though urbanisation has often erased traces of the past, the current border conurbation is the heir to Château-Gaillard, a fortified market town founded by the comtes de Genève in the 13th century, which commanded the land and river passages towards the neighbouring city.
