A little history
Situated on the route of pilgrimages heading to the abbaye territoriale de Saint-Maurice d'Agaune, Évian is thought to have been first and foremost a stopover, owing in particular to its port. It was one of the towns of the former duché de Savoie and of the province of Chablais. It was notably one of the residences of the ducs de Savoie. A historian, M. de Valois, mentions sources according to which the city of Épaone, made famous in 517, may have been one and the same as Évian.
