Souvigny, the town
Souvigny covers 44.4 km², lies between 224 and 357 m above sea level and had 1,698 inhabitants in the 2023 census.
Souvigny is a French commune situated in the département of l'Allier in the région of Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes. Situated at the heart of the Bourbonnais, the town is the birthplace of the Bourbon family, and was an important town in the seigneurie de Bourbon. The town is crossed by the Queune and its tributary the Ris Malnoce.
A little history
The history of Souvigny is closely linked to that of the powerful abbaye de Cluny. In 916, Aimar, the first known ancestor of the Bourbons, donated the church of Souvigny, consecrated to Saint Pierre, to the abbot Bernon. Thanks to this donation, Souvigny became the "fille aînée" of Cluny. The town continued to grow in influence over the Bourbonnais and became a very frequently visited centre of pilgrimage in the Middle Ages. Two great abbots of Cluny who became saints are buried at Souvigny, saint Mayeul and saint Odilon.
