Saurat, the town
Saurat covers 44.3 km², lies between 621 and 1,941 m above sea level and had 700 inhabitants in the 2023 census.
Saurat [soʁat] is a French commune situated in the département of Ariège, in the Occitanie region. The last natural whetstone company in France is located there. From a historical and cultural standpoint, the commune is part of the pays du Sabarthès, structured by the upper valley of the Ariège upstream of the pays de Foix, with Tarascon-sur-Ariège as its main town.
A little history
In 970, Roger 1er de Carcassonne acquired the fief of Saurat in exchange for some land he held at Lordat and the gift of the alleu de Saurato (Saint Sernin) by Roger, comte de Carcassonne, to a priest named Sanche. Saurat is mentioned in 1034. In 1163, there is mention of the « castello de Saurat », which was ceded by Raymond de Rabat to the comte de Foix. In 1244, P. de Saurat was at Monségur (it should be noted that the family de Rabat was implicated in the heresy and the massacre of Avignonnet carried out from Monségur). In 1272, the valley of Saurat, together with the châteaux de Saurat and de Calamières, became part of the Comté de Foix.
