Tarascon-sur-Ariège (in Occitan, Tarascon d'Arièja) is a French commune, situated in the département of Ariège in the région of Occitanie. From a historical and cultural standpoint, the commune is the main town of the pays du Sabarthès, structured by the upper valley of the Ariège upstream of the pays de Foix. Exposed to an altered oceanic climate, it is drained by the Ariège, the Vicdessos, the ruisseau de la Courbière and by another watercourse.
A little history
Tarascon-sur-Ariège was in the Middle Ages an important commercial centre, which led to the construction of a defensive wall protecting the town. Governed by consuls, it was one of the four towns of the comté de Foix. In the 12th century, a second defensive wall was built, along with a bridge allowing the Ariège to be crossed, but by the 14th century the expansion of the town was such that it spread beyond the walls, with for example the appearance of the faubourg Sainte-Quitterie known as du bout du pont and the quartier Saint-Jacques known as hors la porte. Between 1625 and 1630, the bishop of Pamiers Henri de Sponde, godson of Henri IV, attempted to establish a convent of Minimes in Tarascon but failed for lack of means.
