Ustou (in Occitan Uston) is a French commune situated in the département of Ariège in the Occitanie region. From a historical and cultural standpoint, the commune forms part of the Couserans, a land of Gascon roots structured by the course of the Salat. Exposed to a mountain climate, it is drained by the Alet, the ruisseau de Bielle, the ruisseau Ossèse and various other small watercourses.
A little history
The earliest traces of occupation in the valley date from the Neolithic period. Amateur archaeologists reported finding, near the entrance to the grotte de Font Sainte and another cavity located on the opposite bank of the river, hewn tools and buried bones. In addition, several "peyros quillados" (standing stones) have been recorded in the valley, along with formations of the cromlech type at higher altitudes. The place names of the villages reveal Gallo-Roman influences (Bielle, Sérac, Portet), pre-Indo-European influences (Ariail, Alet), and then more recent ones (Le Trein, Escots, Pont de la Taule), indicating continuous human occupation for at least 2,000 years.
