Pamiers (Pàmias in Occitan) is a French commune situated in the north of the département of Ariège, in the Occitanie region. From a historical and cultural standpoint, the commune forms part of the pays de l'Aguanaguès or plaine d'Ariège, sometimes called basse Ariège, or piémont ariégeois. Exposed to an altered oceanic climate, it is drained by the Ariège, the Crieu, the Galage, the Estrique, the ruisseau de la Galage and by various other small watercourses.
A little history
The Roman presence is attested notably by the discovery of coins (on the place du Mercadal where the cathedral stands) and a remarkably well-preserved bronze statuette of Mercury on the site of the cimetière Saint-Jean. It is therefore possible, from reliable sources, to trace the Roman presence back to the 3rd century BC. On 2 May 1963, a funerary well dated to between 50 and 30 BC was discovered on the butte du calvaire.
