Mirepoix (Mirapeis in Languedocian Occitan) is a French commune situated in the north-east of the département of Ariège, in the Occitanie region. From a historical and cultural standpoint, the commune forms part of the pays d'Olmes, a renowned setting of the Cathar tragedy, combining landscapes of great diversity. Exposed to an altered oceanic climate, it is drained by the Hers-Vif, the Countirou, the ruisseau des Bessous, the ruisseau de Lestrique, the ruisseau de Malgoude and various other small watercourses.
A little history
Mirepoix was first a castrum where several cousin co-lords are to be found. In January 1069, three of them rendered homage to the Viscountess Rangarde de Carcassonne. Subsequently, the co-lords of Mirepoix swore oaths to the Comte de Foix, as in July 1159, when there were eleven of them. As early as 1150, the Viscount Roger de Carcassonne criticised the appropriation of Mirepoix by the Comte de Foix in his will.
