Ax-les-Thermes (pronounced [aks le tɛʁm], in Occitan la Vila d'Ax [la ˈβilɔ ˈðaks, la ˈβilɔ ˈðats]) is a French commune situated in the south-east of the département of Ariège in the Occitanie region. In historical and cultural terms, the commune forms part of the pays du Sabarthès, structured by the upper valley of the Ariège upstream of the pays de Foix with Tarascon-sur-Ariège as its main town. Exposed to an altered oceanic climate, it is drained by the Ariège, the Lauze, the Oriège and various other small watercourses.
A little history
The sodium sulphur waters of Ax, the hottest in the Pyrenees (up to 77 °C), were already known in the Gallo-Roman period. In the time of Jules César, fortifications with six towers are said to have existed on the lieu-dit "Castel Mau". In 1875, Roman coins were found there, which could confirm a Roman presence on the site. In 978, in the context of conflicts between the comte Oliba Cabreta de Cerdagne and the comte Roger Ier de Carcassonne, the monks of the monastery of Ripoll stole the relics of saint Eudald kept in the église Saint-Vincent.
