Saint-Girons ([sɛ̃ʒiʁɔ̃], in Gascon Sent Gironç) is a French commune situated in the west of the département of Ariège, in the région of Occitanie. Its name was given in homage to Girons d'Hagetmau, evangeliser of the Novempopulanie. In historical and cultural terms, the commune forms part of the Couserans, a land with Gascon roots structured by the course of the Salat.

A little history

Due to the presence of a defensive site, it was at Saint-Lizier that the Romans established, under the name of Lugdunum Consoranorum, the seat of the civitas of the Consoranni, in Gallia Narbonensis. This city later became, and remained until 1789, the seat of a bishopric. In 1994, the discovery of a hoard of 13,000 billon coins dating from the 3rd century (between 250 and 280) during the excavation of a cellar in the rue de la République cast doubt on a previously accepted assertion that the site of Saint-Girons had for a long time housed only warehouses on the banks of the Salat, and a few villae. The fragments discovered beneath this hoard indicate the prior existence of a settlement occupied from the beginning of the 1st century AD.
