Foix [fwa] (in Occitan Foish) is a French commune, former capital of the comté de Foix, and today the prefecture of the département de l'Ariège in the région Occitanie. A little history
The caves and shelters located on the territory of the commune (the grottes du Rocher, du Saint-Sauveur and du Pech) were occupied at least intermittently during prehistory. As regards the Rocher, the earliest trace of occupation belongs to the final Mousterian period (approx. 40,000 BC, the abris de Lianes). The Perigordian period (approx. 20,000 BC) is attested only at the foot of the Saint-Sauveur (grottes de la Carane). The caves of the rue du Rocher then bear witness to a significant Magdalenian occupation (approx. 10,000 BC), including in particular parietal engravings depicting horses, in the grotte du Cheval.
