Samoëns (pronounced [samwɛ̃]) is a French commune situated in the south of the département of Haute-Savoie, in the region of Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, adjoining the Swiss border. A village in the community of communes of the Montagnes du Giffre, the commune had 2,203 inhabitants in 2023. Its ski resort and ski area have merged with the Grand Massif domain.
A little history
During the war between the Swiss and the Burgundians, the duchy of Savoie allied itself with the latter and a Savoyard army besieged the Valaisian town of Sion. In retaliation, the confederate troops of Berne and Lucerne crossed the col de Joux Plane and set fire to the town of Samoëns on 10 or 11 June 1476. They destroyed the château de la Tornaltaz situated at the summit of what is today the alpine botanical garden La Jaÿsinia. They then withdrew via the col de Coux.
