Samatan covers 33.5 km², lies between 155 and 252 m above sea level and had 2,517 inhabitants in the 2023 census.
Samatan (Samatan in Gascon) is a French commune situated in the department of Gers in the region of Occitanie. From a historical and cultural standpoint, the commune is in the Savès, a small Gascon province corresponding to the middle course of the Save. Exposed to an altered oceanic climate, it is drained by the Save, the Aussoue, the Lieuze, the Espienne, the Esquinson, the ruisseau des tachouères and by various other small watercourses.
A little history
Samatan has retained little of its past. It is a former castral village, a fief of the comtes de Comminges, whose château has entirely disappeared. Until the Revolution, Samatan was a châtellenie of the comté de Comminges. Samatan was ravaged by the Prince Noir in 1355 during the Hundred Years War and the survivors then went to swell the population of Lombez, barely two kilometres away, which had been spared by the chevauchée of the Prince Noir as it was a bishopric, unlike Samatan, which was a trading town.
