Saïx, the town
Saïx covers 13.8 km², lies between 147 and 263 m above sea level and had 3,748 inhabitants in the 2023 census.
Saïx (pronounced [sajs]) is a French commune situated in the département of Tarn, in the région of Occitanie. From a historical and cultural standpoint, the commune lies within the Castrais, an essentially agricultural territory, between the right bank of the Agout to the south and its tributary, the Dadou, to the north. Exposed to an altered oceanic climate, it is drained by the Agout and by various other small watercourses.
A little history
The hypothesis that Raymond de Saïsse, founder of the Chartreuse in 1359, gave his name to the village must be firmly dismissed, as the name Saïx appears in history well before the said founder was born. Saïx appears in the 9th century as an "alleu" (property) of the Benedictines of Castres. This is attested by an epitaph of 1250 discovered in the ruins of the former convent of the Cordeliers of Castres, engraved on a vault at the request of Isabelle de France, sister of King Saint Louis, for her close friend Armoise de Lautrec, who had entered as a reclusive nun in a convent at Saïx.
