Saint-Pons-de-Thomières [sɛ̃ pɔ̃s də tɔmjɛʁə] (in Occitan Sant Ponç de Tomièiras ['sant 'puns de tu'miɛjrɔs]), is a French commune situated to the west of the département of Hérault in the region of Occitanie. Exposed to a Mediterranean climate, it is drained by the Jaur, the Aguze, the Salesse, the ruisseau de Cavenac, the ruisseau de Fonclare, the ruisseau du Saut and various other small watercourses. Included within the parc naturel régional du Haut-Languedoc, the commune possesses a remarkable natural heritage, two Natura 2000 sites (the grotte de la Rivière Morte and the grotte de la source du Jaur) and four natural zones of ecological, faunal and floral interest.
A little history
The abbaye de Saint-Pons-de-Thomières was founded by Raymond III Pons, comte de Toulouse, in honour of the holy martyr Pons de Cimiez. The parish of the town was Saint-Martin du Jaur. The parishes of Saint-Thomas des Verreries, Notre-Dame de Courniou, Saint-Fabien de Prouilhe and Saint-Mathias de Marthomis were annexes of the parish of Saint-Pons. Initially, Saint-Pons-de-Thomières formed part of the diocese of Narbonne.
