Saint-Michel, the town
Saint-Michel covers 42.2 km², lies between 172 and 278 m above sea level and had 3,199 inhabitants in the 2023 census.
Saint-Michel is a French commune situated in the natural region of the Thiérache, in the north-east of the département of Aisne in the Hauts-de-France region. Its inhabitants are called the Saint-Michelois(es). The commune is also known, though not officially, as Saint-Michel-en-Thiérache.
A little history
The village lay on the Roman road leading to the Roman camp at Macquenoise. At the beginning of the tenth century, on the site of the town there was nothing more than an oratory dedicated to Saint Michel-Archange. From the seventh century onwards, it was the destination of a pilgrimage. In 945, a number of Irish or Scottish missionaries came to settle near this oracle and founded an abbey there, the layout of which had been designed to meet the requirements of the rule of saint Benoît.
