Saint-Mathieu-de-Tréviers [sɛ̃ ma.tjø də tʁe.viɛ] (in Occitan Sant Matieu de Trevièrs ['sant ma.'tiew de 'tre.βi.ɛs]) is a French commune situated in the north-east of the département of Hérault, in the région of Occitanie. Exposed to a Mediterranean climate, it is drained by the Terrieu, the ruisseau de Cecelés, the ruisseau de la Croix and by various other small watercourses. The commune possesses a remarkable natural heritage, two Natura 2000 sites (the « pic Saint-Loup » and the « hautes garrigues du Montpelliérais ») and six natural zones of ecological, faunal and floral interest.
A little history
Saint-Mathieu-de-Tréviers has a rich prehistoric past. Neanderthal man settled in the grotte de l'Hortus from 55,000 years before our era, at the foot of the eponymous cliff that overlooks the village. The statue-menhir displayed in the entrance hall of the mairie bears witness to the presence of man 5,000 years ago on its territory. The château du Lébous is an archaeological site dating from the 14th century BC.
