Saint-Léon, the town

Saint-Léon covers 33.6 km², lies between 245 and 436 m above sea level and had 530 inhabitants in the 2023 census.

Saint-Léon is a French commune situated in the département of l'Allier, in the région of Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes.

A little history

Four kilometres from Châtelperron, where there was a worked flint factory that gave its name to the Castelperronian period, Saint-Léon has retained no trace of Neolithic prehistory (35,000 BC), save for a few worked objects. A small Romanesque priory was established at the top of the puy Saint-Ambroise around the 11th century, with a community of monks. These monks cleared the oak forest at the summit of the puy in order to build the priory.
