Saint-Jean-de-Védas [sɛ̃ ʒɑ̃ də vedas] is a French commune situated in the east of the département of Hérault, in the Occitanie region. Bordering Montpellier, the commune is part of Montpellier Méditerranée Métropole. Exposed to a Mediterranean climate, it is drained by the Mosson and the Rieucoulon.
A little history
The first mention of « Villa de Védatio », meaning farm of Védas, appears in the records of the cartulaire de Maguelone as early as the 11th century. This may explain the current pronunciation of the name of the commune, as the final « s » of « Védas » must be pronounced. The present-day territory of the commune was administered until the French Revolution by two jurisdictions, that of Saint-Jean-de-Védas and that of Terral. The domain of Terral was the property of the bishops of Maguelone since the 9th century.
