A little history
Saint-Germain-des-Fossés is first known for a priory that gave it its name through its former religious life, and a railway station that is a reminder of its dynamism as a geographical crossroads during the industrial era. The conventual priory of Saint-Germain-des-Fossés was already a dependency of the abbaye de Mozac when the latter received a papal bull from Pope Alexandre III in 1165. From late 1941 to 1942, the hôtel des Épigeards (the current town hall) housed the Centre d'accueil des évadés. This organisation was at that time answerable to the ministry of labour of the État français.
