The origin of the name Saint-Gély-du-Fesc may derive from Saint Gilles l'Ermite, Sant Gèli in Occitan, also known as Saint Egide (from his Greek name Ægidius), whose cult dates back to the 8th century in the region, and from Fesc, which means a control post or a toll post (from the Latin fiscus) in Occitan. Saint-Gély-du-Fesc was a parish whose history was linked from the 13th century onwards to that of a small group of communities in the region which depended on the château de Montferrand.
