Saint-Gaultier ([sɛ̃.gotje]) is a French commune situated in the département of Indre, in the Centre-Val de Loire region. Exposed to an altered oceanic climate, it is drained by the Creuse, the Bouzanteuil and two small watercourses. Included in the parc naturel régional de la Brenne, the commune possesses a remarkable natural heritage composed of two natural areas of ecological, faunal and floral interest.
A little history
Saint-Gaultier owes its name to Gaultier, abbot of the abbaye de Lesterps in Charente. In 1040, the comte de la Marche and the seigneur de Chabanais pillaged and burnt down the abbaye de Lesterps. The abbé Gaultier, absent at the time of the events, lodged a complaint with the sovereign pontiff, who excommunicated the two criminals. As reparation, the comte de la Marche was required to meet the costs of rebuilding the abbey.
