Exposée à un climat de montagne, elle est drainée par la Mare, le Bouissou, l'Héric, le Bitoulet, le Casselouvre, le ruisseau d'Arles, le ruisseau de Madale et par divers autres petits cours d'eau. Incluse dans le parc naturel régional du Haut-Languedoc, la commune possède un patrimoine naturel remarquable, deux sites Natura 2000 (« le Caroux et l'Espinouse » et la « montagne de l'Espinouse et du Caroux »), deux espaces protégés (l'« Espinouse » et Le Caroux-Espinouse) et cinq zones naturelles d'intérêt écologique, faunistique et floristique.
