Rieux-Minervois covers 21.2 km², lies between 55 and 180 m above sea level and had 1,957 inhabitants in the 2023 census.
Rieux-Minervois (in Occitan Rius de Menerbés) is a French commune, situated in the north of the département of Aude in the région of Occitanie. From a historical and cultural standpoint, the commune forms part of the Minervois, a land of low hills stretching from the Cabardès to the west, to the Biterrois to the east, and from the Montagne Noire to the north, as far as the river Aude to the south. Exposed to a Mediterranean climate, it is drained by the Argent-Double, the Rascas, the ruisseau de Canet, the ruisseau de Naval, the ruisseau de Saint-Julien and various other small watercourses.
A little history
It appears that the river Argent-Double was home to a settlement on its banks as early as the Gallo-Roman period. Numerous villae surrounded its course, as the archives attest. "Near the river", Al Riùs may be at the origin of the name. To distinguish it from other places called "Rieux", it is followed by the qualifier "Minervois" in reference to the ancient pagus Minerbensis, known since the Gallo-Roman period. A reference to it is found in a charter of Charles le Chauve dated 855, as pagus Minarbensi, applied to the region. The village is said to have come into being around a castrum towards the year one thousand.
