Réalmont, in Occitan Reialmont / Rièlmont, known during the Revolution under the name of Montdadou, is a French commune situated in the département of Tarn, in the région of Occitanie. From a historical and cultural standpoint, the commune lies within the Albigeois, a natural agricultural region corresponding to the surroundings of the town of Albi. Exposed to an altered oceanic climate, it is drained by the Dadou, the ruisseau de Blima, the ruisseau de Siez and by various other small watercourses.
A little history
It was on 12 March 1272, under Philippe le Hardi king of France, that Guillaume de Cohardon founded a royal bastide which he named Réalmont. The territory on which the town of Réalmont was established had belonged to Bernard de Boissezon, a wealthy lord of the Albigeois. He held it as a rear fief from the baron de Lombers and was dispossessed of it by the judgements of the Inquisition on grounds of heresy. Furthermore, the king of France needed to strengthen his prestige in the region where the authority of the local lords was very great.
