Rabastens [ʁabastɛ̃s] is a French commune situated in the west of the département of Tarn, in the région of Occitanie. From a historical and cultural standpoint, the commune lies within the Gaillacois, a pays whose reputation rests on the quality of its wines. Exposed to an altered oceanic climate, it is drained by the Tarn, the ruisseau de Passe, the ruisseau d'Avignon, the ruisseau de Grouse, the ruisseau de la Saudrone, the ruisseau de Marguestal and by various other small watercourses.
A little history
From Antiquity, the hillsides of Rabastens were inhabited, as evidenced by the remains of a Gallo-Roman town at Las Peiras, discovered 1 km from the town. A first excavation campaign, carried out in 1840 by Gustave de Clausade, yielded a mosaic and marble column drums carved with equestrian scenes (these are currently on display at the Musée Saint-Raymond de Toulouse). A second excavation campaign in the 1970s yielded a splendid mosaic, since displayed at the musée du pays Rabastinois. Place names ending in "ens", in the local toponymy, suggest a Germanic, and even Visigothic, origin and character.
