Puylaurens [pɥiloʁɑ̃] (local pronunciation) is a French commune situated in the south of the département of Tarn, in the Occitanie region. From a historical and cultural standpoint, the commune lies within the Lauragais, the former « Pays de Cocagne », linked both to the cultivation of pastel and to the abundance of its produce, and known as the « grenier à blé du Languedoc ». Exposed to an altered oceanic climate, it is drained by the Agout, the Girou, the ruisseau de Bagas, the ruisseau d'en Guibaud, Beral Den Alric, the ruisseau de Caudiès, the ruisseau d'Oulmine and by various other small watercourses.
A little history
The construction of the château Cap de Castel, completed in 1258, was entrusted to Cathar corvée labour on the orders of Saint Louis, whose parents Blanche de Castille and Louis VIII are said to have stayed in Puylaurens. This brick building, listed in the supplementary inventory of historical monuments, stands at the head of the village (Lou Cap, in Occitan) and served the converging interests of Rome and Paris in the repression of the Cathars. Two parallel functions, political and religious, were assigned to it, serving as both chapel and prison for the village. It is today incorporated into the hotel that bears its name.
