Publier is a French commune located in the département of Haute-Savoie, in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. It is situated in the French Chablais, on the Léman, between Thonon-les-Bains to the west and Évian-les-Bains to the east, and facing Morges and Lausanne in Switzerland. With 7,499 inhabitants on 1st January 2020, it is experiencing strong demographic growth of +2.5% per year since 1999.
A little history
The first human occupation in the Alps is thought to date back to the Neolithic period. On the commune, there is no trace of such an ancient civilisation. However, a monolith hollowed with a multitude of small troughs, known as a pierre à cupules, located near the hamlet of la Bennaz and called the pierre des gaulois, is said to bear witness to the presence on the communal territory of the Ligures, a pre-Celtic people. In the Middle Ages, the Cistercian abbey of Sainte-Marie-d'Aulps held numerous properties in Publier.
