Plaisance, the town

Plaisance (Plasença in Gascon), also known as Plaisance du Gers, is a French commune situated in the département of Gers, in the Occitanie region. From a historical and cultural standpoint, the commune lies within the pays de Rivière-Basse, a territory that stretches along the middle valley of the Adour, at the point where the river bends between Bigorre and Gers. Exposed to an altered oceanic climate, it is drained by the Arros, the ruisseau de Larté, the Canal de Cassagnac, the Barne and various other small watercourses.
A little history
The territory of Plaisance has its origins in the former domain of Ribaute (from the Gascon Rive-Haute, or Ripa Alta in Latin), situated on the left bank of the Arros, near a ford. This first settlement comprised a motte-and-bailey and a hamlet dependent on the lord of Ladevèze. As early as 1141, the Romanesque church of Sainte-Quitterie was served by the Premonstratensian canons of la Case-Dieu, who already held several granges in the surrounding area. In 1299, the latter acquired additional land, paving the way for the creation of a new settlement centre.
