Pessac [pɛsak] is a commune in the South-West of France, situated in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region, in the département of the Gironde. Although heavily urbanised (the commune is one of the main suburbs of Bordeaux and hosts a significant part of its university campus), the commune has retained a few prestigious vineyards that form part of the AOC pessac-léognan.
A little history
Pessac developed along the route of the ancient road, known in Gascon as the Lébade or Levada, that is to say the Levée, which linked Burdigala (Bordeaux) to La Teste-de-Buch. It passes through the town via Brivazac and the university estate before running alongside the A63 at Tuilerane to reach the Croix de Hins. The history of Pessac is marked by the presence of Bertrand de Goth, Archbishop of Bordeaux, who became Pope Clément V in 1305. He gave his name to the château Pape Clément, which was offered to him as Archbishop.
